Choosing the Right Filtration Solution

Every filtration application is different, and you don’t need to determine the correct filter before contacting Vivid Air.

Whether you have a complete specification, an existing filter, equipment details or simply know what you’re trying to achieve, our team can help guide you through the selection process.

When assessing your application, these are the key technical factors we consider:

1

Application: Where will the filtration system be used? The operating environment plays a major role in determining the most suitable filtration approach.

2

Contaminant filters: What needs to be controlled? This may include coarse dust, fine particulate, microorganisms, gases, vapours, odours or a combination of contaminants.

3

Filtration Performance: What level of filtration is required? This helps determine whether the solution requires primary filters, secondary filters, tertiary filters or multiple filtration stages.

4

System Compatibility: The filter must suit the housing, airflow, operating conditions and overall system, not simply the physical dimensions

5

Maintenance Requirements: Replacement frequency, maintenance access and long-term servicing requirements all influence the most practical filtration solution.

6

Testing and Validation: Some applications require filter integrity testing or cleanroom validation after installation to verify that the system performs as intended.

Not sure how these apply to your system? That’s exactly what we’re here to help with. Contact Vivid Air and we’ll guide you through the selection process.

Industrial Air Filters and Filtration Equipment

Vivid Air supplies filters and housings for commercial HVAC, controlled environments and industrial filtration systems.

Once the filtration requirement is clear, the next step is choosing the appropriate filter stage, media or housing.

Primary filters capture larger airborne particles at the first stage of filtration. They reduce the contaminant load reaching the finer filters installed downstream.

Best suited for:

  • Pre-filtration
  • General dust control
  • Commercial HVAC systems
  • Protection of downstream filters

Secondary filters provide finer particulate capture after the primary filtration stage.

Best suited for:

  • Commercial air-handling system
  • Laboratories and technical facilities
  • Industrial applications
  • Protection of final-stage filters

Tertiary filters provide final-stage filtration for applications requiring higher particulate control or selected gas-phase filtration.

The range includes HEPA filters for high-efficiency particulate filtration and activated carbon filters for selected gases, vapours and odours.

Best suited for:

  • Cleanrooms
  • Laboratories
  • Healthcare environments
  • Pharmaceutical facilities
  • Controlled production areas

Bag-In Bag-Out filter housings support controlled filter replacement where used filters may contain hazardous biological or chemical contaminants.

The filter is enclosed during removal, reducing the risk of exposure to personnel and the surrounding environment.

Best suited for:

  • Containment laboratories
  • Hazardous extraction systems
  • Pharmaceutical processes
  • Applications requiring controlled filter changeout

New Filtration System, Replacement Filter or Ongoing Supply?

The information needed depends on whether you are planning a new system, replacing an existing filter or arranging ongoing filter supply.

A complete specification is helpful, but it is not required before making contact. Give us whatever information that’s available, and we’ll advise what still needs to be confirmed.

Your requirement Useful starting information
New air filtration system Application, contaminant, airflow, equipment information, room requirements and required performance.
Existing replacement filters Filter code, label, dimensions, frame, seal, equipment model, photographs and quantity.
Recurring filtration problem Current filter details, replacement history, system readings and any recent operating changes.
Planned filter supply Approved specification, quantities, expected replacement intervals and delivery requirements.

Information That Can Help With a Replacement Quote

Where available, include:

  • A photograph of the filter label
  • Filter dimensions
  • Frame and seal details
  • Equipment or housing model
  • Required quantity
  • Reason for replacement

Avoid Choosing the Wrong Filter

The correct filter is about more than its dimensions. Efficiency, media, airflow, housing and operating conditions all affect whether the filter will perform correctly within the system.

Frame 6

Matching the Filter by Dimensions Alone

Two filters can have the same dimensions but use different media, efficiencies, frames or seals.

A filter that physically fits the housing is not necessarily technically equivalent to the original specification.

Frame 6

Specifying the Highest Available Efficiency

A higher-efficiency filter is not automatically the right option.

The air-handling system must be able to maintain the required airflow with the selected filter installed. Specifying a filter without considering system resistance may reduce airflow or affect system performance.

Frame 6

Expecting the Final Filter to Carry the Full Contaminant Load

Final-stage filters should not compensate for missing, damaged or unsuitable upstream filtration.

Poor pre-filtration allows more particulate to reach the final filter. This can shorten filter life, increase system resistance and raise replacement costs.

Frame 6

Using HEPA Filtration for Every Contaminant

HEPA filters are designed for particulate filtration. They do not automatically remove gases, vapours or odours.

Gas-phase contaminants may require activated carbon filters, another specialist medium, local extraction or a combination of filtration methods.

Frame 6

Replacing the Same Filter Without Investigating Short Service Life

Filters that load sooner than expected may indicate:

  • Increased contaminant loading
  • Poor or damaged upstream filtration
  • Air bypass around the filter
  • Changes to the process
  • An unsuitable filter stage or specification
This matters most for filter integrity testing, where a broad pass/fail isn't enough — HEPA results should tie back to the filter, seal, housing and installation condition.

Why Choose Vivid Air?

Vivid Air combines air filtration, cleanroom, laboratory, filter housing and validation experience. This helps ensure that filters are considered as part of the wider system rather than as isolated products.

Air Filtration and HEPA Filter FAQs

There is no single replacement interval for every filter or installation. Filter life depends on:
  • Contaminant loading
  • Operating hours
  • Upstream filtration
  • System conditions
  • Maintenance requirements
  • Required filtration performance
  • Monitoring or pressure readings

Replacement planning should be based on the actual installation and the requirements of the filter, equipment and facility.
A cleanroom HEPA filter should be specified where the required room classification, process or contamination-control requirement calls for high-efficiency particulate filtration. The selection should consider:
  • Required cleanliness or containment level
  • Particle-control objective
  • Airflow and system resistance
  • Housing and sealing arrangement
  • Applicable facility requirements
  • Integrity-testing requirements

A HEPA filter should not be selected solely because it represents a higher filtration grade.

Professional HEPA integrity testing may be required where the replacement filter forms part of a cleanroom, containment facility or another critical controlled environment.

Testing checks whether unacceptable leakage is present through the filter media, seals or housing.

The requirement depends on the application, applicable standards, facility procedures and validation requirements.

Filter cost can be affected by:
  • Filter type and efficiency
  • Dimensions
  • Frame and seal construction
  • Filter media
  • Required quantity
  • Specialist or safe-change requirements
  • Testing or validation requirements
  • Delivery and replacement frequency

The most accurate approach is to request a quote based on the actual specification or application rather than comparing filters by size alone.
